Summary: This position functions with a high degree of autonomy and reports to the Process Engineering Manager.  The primary focus is process engineering, plant optimization and engineering support that may include capital projects, engineering design, equipment diagnostics, process system review, trouble shooting, emergency or outage work and project management responsibility including budgets, scheduling and contractor orientation/management.   

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:  (Management reserves the right to add or modify the duties and responsibilities at any time.)

  • Act as a representative for the site with regard to Safety, inspires and facilitates a culture of Safety and personal awareness.
  • Enforce proactive environmental, health, and safety processes (MOC process) in compliance with the law and with company policies and documented procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with all company standards, practices, and procedures.
  • Learn plant processes, plant utilities, critical plant equipment and provide key and pivotal input on plant modifications and workarounds.
  • Provide process engineering support to improve plant operation through cost reduction, equipment optimization, and yield improvements.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot processes, including production and packaging operations. `
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiencies/reliability in facility equipment and process/product flow.
  • Update or create maintenance/production operating instructions, engineering drawings (PFDs/P&IDs), equipment records, O&M manuals and procedures.
  • Maintains and function with a team approach to engineering solutions, by involving appropriate members of operations, maintenance, engineering, technical, and ESH staff in the optimum design of all projects.
  • Respond to operations/maintenance management requests to analyze equipment needs related to conceptual process, system efficiency, instrumentation, controls, and equipment improvements.
  • Prepares preliminary project scope, design and cost estimates required to analyze cost to benefit.
  • Perform the function of Project Manager for small projects that could include any combination of: Mechanical, Chemical, Process, Electrical, and/or Structural disciplines.
  • Support capital budget process and prepare projects schedules, detailed project scopes, project budgets and Capital Appropriation Requests (CAR).
  • Represent Compass Minerals as when working with outside engineering firms, vendors, on site construction contractors, and consultants.
  • Competitively bids engineering, equipment procurement and construction contracts, in conjunction with sourcing group. Also, performs pre-bid walk-thru with bidding firms, and post bid analysis.

Deliverables: 

  • Plant optimization as defined by improvements in: process control/automation, throughput, recovery, reliability and energy efficiencies.
  • Projects meet or exceed environmental, health, safety and security (EHS&S) objectives.
  • Proper scoping, budgeting and execution (on, or better than schedule/budget) of assigned capital projects.
  • CAR investment substantiated by project payback/benefit.
  • Develop appropriate written operation and maintenance procedures.
  • Develop and maintain appropriate project drawings and documentation.


Requirements

Experience as a process engineer in a production plant or mining operation with an understanding of process unit operations such as milling, crushing, screening, and material handling (pumping, pneumatic conveying, mechanical conveying, etc.) and packaging is highly desirable.  Understanding of relevant engineering disciplines (civil, structural, mechanical, and electrical) as well as process control, instrumentation, and automation.  Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with all stakeholders (operations, maintenance, purchasing, managers, EHS, and business units).  Ability to lead project execution teams including mentoring and development of others. 

Education and Experience: 

  • A bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline (mechanical, chemical, mining, electrical, etc.)
  • Minimum of five (5) years direct experience in process engineering (mining, minerals or chemical industry preferred).
  • Experience in process engineering including the ability to understand and create Process Flow Diagrams, Process and Instrumentation Diagrams, process equipment specifications, creating process control narratives.
  • Familiar with Control Systems.
  • Experience leading small capital projects (<$250k)  
  • Proficiency with capital analysis/justification and familiarity with predictive/preventative maintenance. 

Computer Skills: 

To perform this job successfully, an individual should be PC proficient and possess the ability to quickly master required computer skills required to function within the Engineering group. Must be proficient in Windows, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Experience with Minitab.

Ability to read, analyze and interpret job related technical information, Ability to write reports, business correspondence, prepare procedure manuals.  Ability to carry out pilot scale testing including equipment installation, system testing, and sample collection.  Ability to work with construction contractors, regulatory officials and outside engineering consultants.

Mathematical and Reasoning Ability and Skills: Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Must be able to check all engineering calculations, engineering drawings, specifications, equipment sizing, piping sizes, motor HP calculations and construction drawings for accuracy. This includes those prepared within the Engineering group and those prepared by outside consultants.  Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed instructions and to deal with problems involving multiple variables.  Ability to collect and accurately assemble data in a logical statistical manner.  Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.  Ability to define problems collects data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
