Colorado River Municipal Water District

Company Overview

The Colorado River Municipal Water District (CRMWD) was created in 1949 as a regional raw water supplier for west Texas. The District’s member cities are Odessa, Big Spring, and Snyder. Municipal customers include the cities of Midland, San Angelo, Abilene, Stanton, Grandfalls, Pyote and the Millersview-Doole Water Supply Corporation. CRMWD also has many large industrial customers.

The service area for the CRMWD includes portions of 34 counties in west Texas and stretches over 225 miles from south of Abilene to west of Monahans, an area bisected by Interstate Highway 20, a major east - west Transportation corridor for the state, and US Highway 87. The main office for the District is in Big Spring and in Howard County.
CRMWD’s raw water transmission system consists of over 600 miles of water transmission pipeline (21 to 60 inches in diameter) with 23 major pump stations. The raw water system includes four groundwater well fields and five permitted reservoirs including Lake J.B. Thomas, E.V. Spence Reservoir, and O.H. Ivie Reservoir. Daily water deliveries average approximately 65 MGD (million gallons per day) to well over 100 MGD in the summer. In addition to traditional ground and surface water supplies CRMWD has added an innovative alternative water supply with the addition of the Big Spring Raw Water Production Facility. This alternative water source utilizes effluent waste water from the city of Big Spring as its source. The treated waste water is further processed using Micro Filtration followed by Reverse Osmosis and advanced Ultra Violet Oxidation disinfection. The purified water is then blended directly back into the raw water distribution system where it is utilized by member and customer cities.
